The State Seal of Biliteracy, marked by a gold seal on the diploma or transcript, recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing one or more languages in addition to English.

The State Board of Education and State Superintended of Public Instruction award the Golden State Seal Merit Diploma (GSSMD) to high school graduates who have demonstrated mastery of the curriculum in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, US History, and two additional subject areas.
